Have you ever stopped to ask yourself, “How often should I decorate?” Are you decorating too often? Not enough? Or, are you the Goldilocks of decorating – you’ve found the schedule that is “just right”? As a professional interior designer, I get asked this question asked all the time!
The timeline you should follow to decorate depends on whether you are focusing on just a room (or two) or if you’re overhauling the whole house. Your schedule will also fluctuate depending on the space that you primarily focus on. We’ll break it down room by room for you!
Any rooms that have a significant amount of family traffic, or a room that welcomes guests, should be updated the most frequently. At the very least, it should be done minimally every 3 or 4 years, but it can be done as often as the season changes. When you refresh your space, you are actually boosting your mental clarity. A clean and clutter space helps you to feel mentally rejuvenated. Our lifestyles and tastes shift each year, and our rooms should accommodate the uses. Places to consider on this timeline are:
Your bedroom is meant to be your sanctuary, your place to escape and relax at the end of a long day. Over the years, our dresser and nightstands tend to become catch-alls because, as a whole, we tend to accumulate more stuff. Soft goods, like comforters, curtains, and sheets tend to wear down over time, too. Not to mention that our tastes and styles change based on the times.
We recommend updating your bedroom minimally every couple of years, four at the latest. Think about it in terms of a child’s room, what works for them as a newborn will not work for them when they are five, and so on. Adults are the same way; our needs and tastes change and our bedroom should reflect that.
Despite what a few home improvement shows lead you to believe, decorating does not need to cost a fortune! You also don’t have to do it all at once. A fresh coat of paint every year or two will do wonders to brighten and refresh your space. Swapping out bedding for a change of the seasons will have the same effect. Adding in a new focal point like a mirror or a pop of color in accessories might be all it takes to make the room feel fresh and welcoming again.
If you feel inclined to update your whole house every year, you should consider why you feel the need. Your home should be a reflection of your family and your lifestyle. What you see in a magazine may not be the ideal situation if you’ve got kids’ toys to store, a couple of fur pets, and an at-home business. Your home should work for you, not add more to your already long “to-do” list.
