“Spring cleaning” isn’t just for springtime! Every season change is an ideal opportunity for deep cleaning — not just springtime — to keep your space organized, clutter-free, comfortable, and homey. When your home is organized, clean, and free of clutter, it can feel like a warm blanket of peace wrapped around your shoulders! Does it get any better than that?! Follow these spring cleaning tips from a Salt Lake City interior decorator to have a smooth (and, dare I say fun?) spring cleaning experience:
The best way to start any cleaning project is with, you guessed it, an organized plan of “attack.” Compile a master list of what needs to be done and write them down. A good idea is to go room-by-room. Determine from the top of the room to the bottom the tasks that need tackling – then write them down! Organizing this way uses your time and energy effectively. For example, you’ll want to wipe down dusty ceiling fans or crumby counters before you were vacuum and scrub the floors.
Once you’ve determined which room you want to start in, and have made your plan of attack, start in one corner of the room and work your way down the wall to the next corner. With this strategy, you minimize a lot of wasted time going back and forth. While yes, you can scrub the wall, the light fixtures, and switches that you find on the wall (and it is advised for a deep clean), you’ll also want to perform the remaining steps along the way.
While deep cleaning, take the opportunity to go through and purge unnecessary items from the area you’re working in, try to handle things only once, when you pick up an object, determine if its something you want or need, or if it’s purgeable. Then either find it a “home” if it’s something valuable enough to keep. If it’s not something useful or worth your time and peace, kick it to the purge bin and unload your container at the nearest Salt Lake City donation center (or a center local to you!)
Take time to organize items you plan to keep. Bins, cubbies, and decorative baskets are great ways to organize your things and decorate your space at the same time. Multifunctional storage solutions are always a huge plus when cleaning, organizing, and decorating.
It’s time to add the final touches! Redecorating your home every time the season changes is a great way to keep your space looking fresh and exciting! Are you tired of looking at the same vase you’ve used for the last five springs? Donate, sell, or repurpose it and choose a new one you’ll love for the next five years and celebrate with fresh flowers!
As you work down your list completing tasks, take a moment to cross off each task that’s been accomplished — and maybe do a happy dance. Seeing your list shrink and your home start to sparkle can give you such a feeling of satisfaction and keeps you motivated to continue your project.
